LETTERS TO EDDY
THE LETTERS OF ADMIRAL SIR ALFRED RYDER TO HIS YOUNG SON 1856 –68
EDITED AND WITH AN INTRODUCTION BY LISLE RYDER
• The extraordinary and affectionate letters sent by a Victorian naval captain to his motherless son from around the world.
• Beautifully illustrated with water - colour sketches and line drawings, Alfred Ryder brings to life the dangers, excitements and everyday happenings of naval life.
After the tragic, early death of his wife, Louisa, Alfred’s young son was cared for by close family and a governess while he was away at sea. He kept in touch in a series of letters, all beautifully illustrated with line drawings and watercolours, written when Eddy was between the ages of nearly 3 and 15. They give wonderful insight into life in the Royal Navy during the period following the Crimean War. While being expressed simply for a child they are also informative and important historical documents.
