As well as with family Alfred was in correspondence with a number of interesting contemporaries both naval and churchmen, such as the Reverend John Keble, Dean Church, Admiral Sir Edmund Lyons, Cardinal Newman, W H Smith etc, Anthony Trollope, Canon H P Liddon.
